Why stay home to tie the knot rather than head overseas

Staying home has been the mantra of the past 18 months or so, but with the UK’s new simplified travel system launching this month, it seems international travel is back on the menu once more.

For couples looking to not just enjoy a holiday abroad but tie the knot overseas, the latest easing of restrictions could mean you get to have your dream wedding in some far-flung location after all. But is heading overseas to get married really all it’s cracked up to be?

Here we take a closer look at why staying home to tie the knot is the better option.

There’s still (tons of) travel restrictions

Don’t let the new simplified travel system lure you into a false sense of security. Under the latest rules, you’ll still have to jump through a few hoops to ensure safe travel as Which? explains:

“Before you book a trip do find out if the country is allowing UK residents to enter, several green-rated countries, such as Canada and the USA currently don’t (though it is due to open up to UK travellers in November, date to be confirmed). Other countries, such as Malta, require you to show an NHS Covid Pass as proof of being fully vaccinated. It’s also essential that you check FCDO advice before travel.”

The pre-departure test, day 8 test and 10-day self-isolation period may have been scrapped, but you will have to take a lateral flow test within 72 hours of your return. If this test is positive, you will not be allowed to return home and will have to abide by the country’s quarantine regulations. It’s also important to note that the latest, simplified rules only apply to those who have been fully vaccinated.

Testing, quarantine and other restrictions will vary depending on the country you intend to travel to, which is a cause for much concern and confusion for travellers. When staying home to get married, there’s no such red tape.

It’s a lot to ask wedding guests to travel

It’s not just you and your husband- or wife-to-be that will have to negotiate the latest travel restrictions. Any guests you invite along to share your special day will have to handle the headache of travelling abroad during a pandemic.

Logistically and financially, selecting a wedding venue here in the UK as your perfect spot to tie the knot makes sense for the happy couple and their wedding guests. As a result, you’ll be able to enjoy your wedding day surrounded by more of the people you adore.

There are more wedding planning challenges

Organising a wedding from a distance is far from ideal, especially considering the language barriers involved with working with suppliers based overseas and the current challenges presented by the global pandemic.

By choosing to get married at home, you can work one-on-one with local suppliers and receive the personalised service you deserve.

Going local with your wedding suppliers unlocks a long list of advantages. You’ll be able to track down the very best wedding vendors through personal, word of mouth recommendations, as well as benefit from the local knowledge they have.

Working with local suppliers also tends to be much more cost-effective, and you won’t have to think about the exchange rate when considering which vendor works best for you and your wedding budget.
